Emerging infrastructures for cure
About Mr. Prof. Dr. Daan W. Hommes
Prof Daniel Hommes, a medical specialist by training, has pioneered new infrastructures for healthcare in the Netherlands. In 2004 he initiated 'The National Warehouse for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD)', merging disease specific datamodels with nationwide biobanks. This resulted in the 'Pearlstring Initiative', a Dutch biobanking network for eight diseases across all Dutch academic centers.
In addition, he integrated biobanking with daily clinical practice by remodeling electronic medical records (EMR) to facilitate disease specific datawarehouses. Also, he introduced eHealth into this model, empowering patients to enter data from home or work combining this with point of care lab testing. This has provided a new roadmap along which several EU and US centers are currently developing infrastructures for future translational care with an optimal use of eHealth. Prof Hommes has co-founded the National IBD Academic Organisation ICC and is currently President of the European Crohn and Colitis Foundation ECCO.
