About Mr. Erik Akerboom

Erik Akerboom (b. 1961) began his career at the Police College in Apeldoorn, and went on to study political science at the VU University in Amsterdam. Until 1998 he held a number of posts within the police service: head of a community police team, district commander and head of the regional criminal investigation support service. He was then appointed director of the Democracy and Rule of Law Department of the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD). On 1 April 2009 he takes over as National Coordinator for Counterterrorism from Tjibbe Joustra, who occupied the post from 1 April 2004 to January 2009.

Erik Akerboom also sits on a number of advisory committees in the field of security and education, and he is dean of the Strategic Leadership course at the Dutch Police College.
